Pineapple Berry Twister Smoothie
Vary the berries depending on what's available. We used a combination of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries. Frozen fruit gibes a thicker texture and means you don't have to use so much ice.

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup pineapple juice
  • 2 pineapple rings, roughly chopped
  • 6 fresh strawberries, hulled
  • 12-15 frozen blueberries
  • 3oz non-fat yoghurt, any flavour
  • Ice, lightly crushed
  • Berries and icing sugar, to decorate
Method:
Put all the ingredients into blender. Blend well until smooth. Decorate with fresh berries and a dusting of icing sugar.
Happy Pineapple Berry Twister Smoothie.

Smoothies
Luscious and sweet as a milkshake, fruit-based smoothies are highly nutritious and can help satisfy a sweet tooth without the fat.
Fast-Becoming the latest craze, smoothies are easy to make. Low in fat and packed with vitamins. They are ideal if you don't have time for breakfast, or to cool off with after exercise. So, dust off your blender and get experimenting with a variety of different fruits and flavours.
In the following recipes you can use milk or different types of yoghurts - from fruit-flavoured to natural or bio-yoghurt, a mild-tasting live variety that's less acidic. Smoothies can be made with most fruits, but bananas are good for texture.

Exotic fruits and coconut are great in smoothie drinks, although quite rich. Cut down on the coconut mil or add some yoghurt for a drink that's lower in fat and slightly tarter in taste.

Ingredients:
  • 2 ripe kiwi fruits, peeled
  • 75 ml low-fat bio-yoghurt
  • Few ice cubes, crushed
  • 2 ripe bananas, peeled and roughly chopped

Method:
Place all the ingredients into a blender and server decorated with slices of kiwi fruit.

Happy Kiwi, Grape and Banana Smoothie.

Tropical Tango Smoothie
Serves 2
Exotic fruits and coconut are great in smoothie drinks, although quite rich. Cut down on the coconut mil or add some yoghurt for a drink that's lower in fat and slightly tarter in taste.

Ingredients:
  • 2 passion fruit
  • 1 small mango, peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 cantaloupe melon, peeled
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk or yoghurt
  • 3 slices pineapple
  • 1/2-1 cup pineapple juice
  • 1 tsp finely chopped ginger
  • Squeeze lime juice, to taste
  • Ice cubes, lightly crushed
  • Lime peel and passion fruit to decorate
Method:
Scoop the flesh from the passion fruit and place in the blender, together with the remaining ingredients. Whiz until smooth - the passion fruit pips will remain whole, but are easy to drink.
Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less lime juice.

Happy Tropical Tango Smoothie.
Smoothie Tips
Here are some tips to improve your smoothie-making abilities:
  • Freeze the fruit for a frostier drink (Bananas work well).
  • Avoid sweetened frozen fruit as this adds calories and may make the drink too syrupy sweet.
  • If your drink’s too thick, add more juice.
  • If the drink’s too thin, add more fruit or a couple of ice cubes.
  • For smoothies that are too tart, add some sugar or artificial sweetener.
  • To ad more zing, add a small spoonful of lemon or lime juice.
